May the coming year bring more happiness to you than last year! Let your New Year's happiness begin by following the safety tips below . . .

Whether you plan to ring in 2018 with a New Year’s Eve celebration in an intimate setting or at a public event, please be mindful of these tips so you can enjoy the revelry safely and securely.

1. Check the weather forecast and dress appropriately, if you plan to attend an outdoor public event.

2. Charge your cell phone before leaving home or in the car so that you can stay in touch should you lose contact with family or friends in your travel circle.

3. Take precautions when traveling: never accept packages from strangers or leave luggage unattended.

4. Be aware of your surroundings, especially amid large crowds. Take note of emergency exits and staircases, and any fire extinguishers or safety equipment in buildings or public venues such as hotels or nightclubs. Stay close to your friends and family members.

5. If You See Something, Say Something. Report any unusual behavior to law enforcement or security personnel at public settings. Leave an area if you feel uncomfortable.

6. Be fireworks friendly by attending a professional show. If you choose to use fireworks at home, check to see that they are legal in your community and use them outdoors only with adult supervision. Keep water on hand in case of an accidental fire.

7. Consider alternate routes, if you are driving in the vicinity of a large-scale public event as streets may be blocked off for festivities.

8. Assign a designated driver or travel to and from destinations by a taxi service. If you decide to drive, be aware of DUI checkpoints and other drivers who may be under the influence of alcohol.

9. Check the schedules of public transit beforehand to ensure you are not stranded.

10. Remind guests to plan ahead to ensure they have a safe way home, if you’re the party host. Provide non-alcoholic beverages on your menu to have options for everyone.

11. Protect your pets from loud noises by keeping them confined and comfortable during the evening.

12. Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Ensure that they work at optimal level, especially if you plan to cook, burn candles, light your fireplace or if you live in a complex with others who also may be hosting a party.
