Winter Park "On Golden Pond" Estate Sale on Jan.14 & 15

January 11th, 2011 12:59 AM by Frank Ferrell

If you appreciate antiques or collectibles as I do, a good place to discover those perfect finds at great prices is an estate sale.

For most of the sales I've been associated with as an Agent, it hasn't been uncommon to see items such as baseball cards, mid-century modern furniture, Persian rugs, old coins, collectible toys and even vintage automobiles.

I once picked up these three original paintings for $25 each, which turned out to be the works of a popular Italian artist from the 1950-60's.

How estate sales work

Typically, everything in the house is priced at a discount for a 2-day sale coordinated by a furniture appraisal company or liquidation firm with the goal of selling it all by the second day.

Shoppers line up early (some even the night before), taking numbers to get their place in line.  Small groups of people are allowed in the home, and others have to wait for them to leave before entering.

The last hour on the first day is a good time to wheel and deal, and the last hour of the last day is even better for negotiating--if there's anything worthy left.
